Interview with Neil Crewdson, Head of Project Management & Capabilities for Sellafield Ltd
Neil joined Sellafield as an apprentice in 1996 and is a member of the senior leadership team accountable for Project Management and its capabilities at Sellafield.
Neil is responsible for over 1600 project professionals across, project management, project controls, risk, estimating, construction, commissioning, pre-operations and the Sellafield project academy. Ensuring Sellafield has the right people, in the right place at the right time.
Question: Neil, you were one of the speakers at our Diversity and Inclusion in UK Nuclear conference. Why did you choose to come along and support the event?
Response: Two reasons really, this is a shared challenge so I wanted to share the Sellafield and my own personal journey, while ensuring we learn from other organisations and meet inspirational people.
Question: What does Diversity and Inclusion mean to you?
Response: In simple terms, this is about getting the best from all our people by recognising, valuing and celebrating our differences.
Question: At the conference you shared some of the diversity and inclusion challenges you noticed in the capability you lead. Can you outline these for the reader please and also share how you are tackling them?
Response: My capabilities don’t look like the society we are part of; I don’t have gender diversity across my different project functions. While we have many historic and legacy reasons for this, we are developing a detailed plan per capability to ensure we are more in-line with the communities that we operate in.
Question: Do you have any pieces of advice for people working on diversity and inclusion in their teams/organisations?
Response: Everybody can make a difference in whatever role you have. Lots of best practice exists in this area so don’t reinvent the wheel. Talk and listen to your own people.
Thank you for taking the time to speak with us Neil.
